If you eat at only one Vietnamese restaurant in San Francisco, make it The Slanted Door. Executive Chef, Charles Phan seamlessly meshes traditional Vietnam with modern San Francisco for the best of both worlds. Authentic Vietnamese cuisine using traditional methods and local, organic, sustainable ingredients (including produce from the Marketplace just outside their doors) is served in a very modern setting overlooking the Bay. Phan never cuts corners & everything is made from scratch.
Phan and his family moved from Da Lat, Vietnam to Guam in 1975; two years later settling into San Francisco’s Chinatown. He studied architecture at U of C Berkeley, designed clothing for a while, and even sold software in Silicon Valley, but lucky for us, his passion for food & his mother’s culinary influence never left him. Charles left the software business & soon opened up the original Slanted Door. He relocated the restaurant to the Ferry Building in 2004 to a packed house nearly every night.
If you didn’t make reservations, there are two options: try the lounge (the full menu is served) or the new take-out counter called Out the Door.
