I fear returning home from a once in a lifetime visit to a great city saying, “THAT was there, and I didn’t see it?” Worse still, spending two hours looking for the nation's best cookbook shop that I should have spent at the best cookbook shop. With today’s online sources, wasting time like that is inexcusable. Now, getting lost in a city to find its true identity; that’s a whole different trip.
Here are some great online maps & resources for your next trip to Manhattan:
Subway Map:
The New York Subway System is safe & very easy. Quickly memorize which trains go in which direction - after a day or two, you won’t even need the map.
Bus Routes:
The subway may be faster, but you see more of the city from a bus. Plus, the subway may only take you in the general vicinity of your destination; just jump on a bus to ride the rest of the way. Side Note: Metro tickets are interchangeable between the subway & buses.
Neighborhood Maps:
A palm-sized neighborhood map (from Go NYC) is great for touring a designated area: SoHo’s art galleries, west midtown music landmarks, Chelsea’s architecture, etc. Mark destination points on these disposable maps & carry them discreetly in a jacket pocket; that way, you can easily check your location. (Very important for women traveling alone to look confident & un-touristy.)
